Elias Thorne

Elias Thorne is a Melbourne-based mixed-media artist whose practice bridges the raw, tactile realities of urban construction and the ephemeral digital landscape. Growing up in the industrial corridors of Melbourne’s inner west, Thorne became fascinated by the lifecycle of structures: the permanence of steel and concrete versus the obsolescence of memory in the digital age.

He holds a Bachelor of Design (Photography) from RMIT University (2015) and a Master of Fine Arts (Digital Media) from the Victorian College of the Arts (2018). His academic background cemented a unique fusion of mechanical engineering principles and digital coding within his fine art practice.

In his studio, physical salvage—rusted steel, reclaimed concrete, and demolished timber—undergoes a violent transformation. Thorne cuts, solders, and reconstructs these obsolete materials into rigid relief structures. Simultaneously, he generates complex digital images—architectural glitches, corrupted code data, and fragmented suburban landscapes. These flawless digital elements are printed, manipulated, or embedded back into the raw physical frameworks.

His work invites viewers to find beauty in obsolescence and to question the fragility of both physical reality and digital preservation. Thorne’s aesthetic is characterized by this duality: the heavy, corroded patina of decay held in sharp contrast to the luminous, sterile precision of data streams and LED light. By defining his materials as "physical construction salvaged from demolition sites with augmented digital overlays," he created a compelling body of work that established him as a significant voice in contemporary Australian mixed media.
