Artist Statement

Niloufar Gheysari is a Tehran-based curator and art director whose practice sits at the intersection of literature, typography, installation, and performance. Trained in Handicrafts and Photography, she treats each exhibition as a translation problem, taking a conceptual or literary reference (Hedayat's Blind Owl, the psychology of solitude, the branding of contemporary identity) and finding its spatial and visual equivalent. Her recent projects; Blind Owl, Solo Duet, Issues, Sound & Image; move deliberately between disciplines, treating painting, sculpture, sound, and the viewer's physical presence as parts of a single composition rather than separate media. As a member of the Iranian Calligraphers Association, she brings a typographic sensitivity that runs through even her multidisciplinary work. Her curatorial voice is less about presenting objects than about staging encounters, building the room a work needs in order to be understood.

In the Studio

Niloufar Gheysari (b. 1991, Ahvaz, Iran) is a curator and art director based in Tehran, working across exhibition-making, artistic direction, and multidisciplinary art project production. She holds an M.A. in Photography from the University of Tehran and a B.A. in Handicrafts from Shiraz University, a combination that grounds her curatorial practice in both a material and an image-based understanding of visual work.

Her practice centers on translating conceptual and literary ideas into coherent visual and spatial experiences, drawing together painting, sculpture, installation, performance, typography, literature, and cinema within a single curatorial framework. Rather than presenting works in isolation, she builds exhibitions around a governing idea — often a literary or psychological reference point — and develops the visual and spatial language needed to carry it.

Among her recent projects, Blind Owl (Aliha Gallery, Tehran, 2025) reworked the literary and psychological atmosphere of Sadegh Hedayat's novel into a typographic and adaptation-based exhibition. Solo Duet (Thaleth Gallery, Tehran, 2025) used painting, sculpture, and installation to explore solitude, duality, and the coexistence of contrasting elements. In 2026, she directed Issues and Sound & Image, both staged at Freya Gallery in Tehran's Espinas Hotel, which brought together painting, sculpture, installation, sound, and performance to examine the relationship between artwork, space, and the viewer's physical presence. That same year she curated an event at Keyart Gallery exploring the intersection of contemporary art, visual identity, and branding.

Gheysari is a member of the Iranian Calligraphers Association, reflecting a typographic and calligraphic sensitivity that runs through her broader curatorial work. She works across Persian, English, and French, and has participated in group exhibitions spanning painting, typography, and visual arts.
